Caleb let out a deep breath. That sentiment had been like a rising tide within him for the last few weeks. He knew he was falling for Jane. He had expected that he would have difficulty avoiding constantly comparing his feelings for Jane to the way he had felt, and perhaps even still felt, about Kristen. After all, she had been the only other woman with whom he had fallen in love.
But as he held Jane in his arms, he arrived at a somewhat surprisingly realization: he could not really remember Kristin. And it was not only the memory of loving her that had faded. He could not even remember things they enjoyed doing together or the details of her face. The tale he had recounted to Jane comprised, as near as makes no difference, the totality of his memories of his daughtersâ mother. And with this epiphany came the understanding that he had spent his daughtersâ entire lives acting as if Kristen had just stepped out for groceries and should return any second. Obviously, he had done this out of sanity-saving necessity in the immediately wake of her departure. But as he kept up the masquerade over the years, it seemed as though something else had happened so quietly that it went completely unnoticed. Caleb theorized that after years of waiting for his conscious mind to face the trauma of Kristenâs sudden disappearance and mourn the end of their marriage, his subconscious had decided to act on its own and had scrubbed nearly all traces of Kristen from his memory. All that was left was the memory of a memory, enough to keep him from feeling as though he had been struck with schizophrenia.
He pulled his hand from behind Jane, causing her to sit up straight and glance at him questioningly. He said, âI donât think I need this any longer.â He tried to slide his wedding band off, but found it was securely lodged in place by his knuckle. No matter how hard he tugged, it refused to budge even minutely.
Jane said, âYouâre going to hurt yourself. But I read about a life-hack for that. Iâll be right back.â
She hopped out of the pool and scampered toward the house. Caleb decided to take the opportunity to make use of her washroom and to refill their beverages. As he reached the house, he spied Janeâs frilly underthings laying on a chair beside the back door. He shrugged and removed his own boxers so as to not track water into the house. His tasks completed, he returned to the hot tub to find Jane waiting for him. The evening was moonless and slightly overcast, meaning only a handful of stars were visible. The only ambient light came from a streetlight at the end of Janeâs street, and the security light on the house of her closest neighbor. But Caleb discovered this was more than enough to make out the shape of Janeâs impeccable breasts as they bobbed alluringly on the
